Stories with familiar settings
We have been reading the story 'The Pirates Next Door' by Jonny Duddle. We acted out the story, wrote messages to Jim Lad and also wrote a story all about Jim Lad and Matilda's adventures.
After reading lots of riddles we found out that a riddle is a series of clues written to fool the reader. We researched different animals using film clips and books. Using the information we had collected we wrote our own riddles.
We have been representing numbers in different ways including partitioning, drawing tens and ones and writing the number in words. It was fun working as a team, to find different ways of making a number.
We have found out about the physical and human features in the local area. First we looked around the school grounds and then we went for a walk on the roads nearby to see what we could see. We saw lots of different types of houses as well as Pendle Hill in the distance. Next we drew our own maps to show the features around our school.
We have been finding out how games have changed over the years by asking our parents which games they played when they were young. We talked about different games that can be played in the playground and found that many of them have been played in the past.
We identified lots of different feelings. We talked about how to recognise how other people are feeling by looking at the expressions on their faces.
Year 1 2018-19
During the first half of the Autumn Term, our theme has been ‘Family Album’, we have been very busy in Kangaroo Class!
We started off the year by looking at the traditional tales of The Gingerbread Man and Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We used our talk for writing skills to retell the story, as well as making many props such as masks and stick puppets to help us act the story out. In our writing we have described the different characters in the story and looked at their feelings.
In Maths we have been looking at numbers and place value. We have been practising writing our numbers and counting out different objects. We have also been counting in 10’s all the way to 100! We have moved on to measuring and ordering objects by length and weight. We will start to compare items to see if they are more or less than 1 metre in length.
So far in theme we have been doing lots of Geography, exploring maps and atlases. We have identified what countries are within the United Kingdom and we even know what the capital cities are! We have started to look at the famous land marks across London. We are going to be moving on to looking at our family trees over the next couple of weeks.
