School Library is now open

8th January 2020

Dear Parent/Carer,

We are delighted to announce that our school library is now open for the children to use during the school day.  Thank you for all of the contributions and donations you have made to support the development of our library.

Children will be allocated a library session during the school week based on their year group.  We aim to:

  • Increase children’s enjoyment of books.
  • Ensure the children have access to a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts.
  • Encourage children to try new authors and subjects.
  • Encourage children to research new areas of learning.

We are hoping to open our school library to you and your children after school so that you get the opportunity to share books and enjoy the surroundings.  More details of this will follow.

Loans

Every book in the school is catalogued on our ‘Junior Librarian’ system.  Each child has an account on this system that enables us to keep track of the books that they are reading and that they currently have on loan.  Children are entitled to borrow one book from the school library that they may keep for two weeks.  They may renew their book after the two weeks if they so wish. Children will not be permitted to loan more books until their library book has been returned.

Replacing Lost or Damaged Books

As you know, books are very expensive and all the children know how we expect them to look after the books they borrow. However, if your child loses or damages a book they have borrowed, then we would ask you to pay for a replacement. This will allow the library to maintain a healthy stock of reading material. If you do not want to have to pay for any replacements due to loss or damage, then your child will not be able to borrow books from our library.

  • Reminder 1:  If the book still has not been returned one week after the due date, a letter is printed off and given to the child.
  • Final reminder: A letter is sent to parents/carers asking for the book to be returned or payment for a replacement to be made.

Birthday Books

As a combined push to raise the profile of reading for pleasure in school and to increase stock in the school library, we would like to propose the following.

We know lots of you like to share the celebrations of your child’s birthday with their friends at school by bringing in treats for the class.  However, as an alternative to this, we would like to encourage you to consider buying a book for the school library to mark your child’s birthday. It is longer lasting and would leave a lovely legacy of your child’s time with us at Reedley for many years.  If everybody did this, we

would receive over 400 new books every year – we could never afford to do this and it would have such a positive impact across the school.

We will put a sticker (with the date) in the front of the book saying that it was a gift from your child to celebrate their birthday.

We welcome gifts of books at any time, not just your child’s birthday!

Thank you for you continued support,

Mrs Gorrell
