Materials

This term in science we have been learning about the properties of different materials.

How to identify materials - BBC Bitesize

Which material resists being scratched the most?

Which material does not soak water up?

Which material feels smooth to touch?

Which material can be cleaned easily with soap and water?

The children are experimenting with different types of material to how absorbent they are. They are looking at a variety of materials and tried assessing the durability, strength and absorbency of them.

The Properties of Materials

This week, the pupils in 5HM have been completing a series of experiments in order to identify which method will separate a selection of materials.

Dissolving

This weeks experiments revolve around the dissolving abilities had by different types of materials.

Within this experiment, we have used:

  • Flour
  • Baking powder
  • Coffee (instant)
  • Salt
  • Oil (use a cooking oil)
  • Sugar

Evapouration

You may ask yourself "what is evaporation?"

Evaporation is a type of vaporization that occurs on the surface of a liquid as it changes into the gas phase.

Separation

This week, we have been experimenting with magnets and sieves, in order to identify which method will separate a selection of materials. The materials that require separating include:

  • Rice
  • Flour
  • Brass
  • Copper

Space

The children have been learning all about space.

They have learnt about the position of the Sun, Earth and Moon in our solar system and have thought about how the Earth moves in relation to the Sun.

The children have also researched about the different planets.
