Autumn 1

Ourselves, Houses and Homes

In the file attachments you will find the vocabulary that we are learning this half term and our topic key questions. Throughout our topic we will use our vocabulary and new learning to help us answer our key questions.

Over the last three weeks children have participated in Physical Development Sessions with Coach Wall and Class teachers. Children will be focusing on developing the fundamental movements such as running, skipping, hopping, jumping, walking, jogging and side stepping. Children have been learning to listen carefully to instructions such as stop and go. They have also been learning to play with a partner passing equipment such as beanbags and balls to each other. Children have enjoyed learning how to control the parachute using the words low and high, fast and slow. Children have played games with the parachute including colour games, under and over games.

In Maths we have been learning about the numbers one and two. Children have been making the numbers using different mathematical equipment such as an abacus, Numicon shapes, number fans, counters, cubes tens frames and bead strings. Children also drew the number e.g. two faces or two hearts. After this teachers modelled how we can form the numerals and we recapped how we can make the number 1 (1+0=1) and 2 (2+0=2) (1+1=2).

For the past two weeks in Literacy, we have been looking at the book Owl Babies. We loved retelling the story in the garden area using materials and props to support our re tell.  Children have been very creative in the workshop areas look at our pictures! Children have also drawn a scene from the book and enjoyed telling teachers about the story. They retold scenes from the story of Owl Babies from what they could recall using words and phrases from the story.

Children have been learning phonics over the past four weeks. They have learnt the letter sounds s, a, t, p, i, n, m d.  In phonics all children have begun to read simple words using their phonics knowledge. This week children have been practicing to push each sound to blend the sounds together in order to read the word e.g. sat, dog, sad, mat, pin, and dad. Children have been practicing forming m, d, g and reading words with these sounds in such as dog, dad, pig, dig, tag. We will play phonics games; you can help your child by playing online games on phonics play.

Children have been working hard to discuss what they'd like to be when they grow up. We used illustrations from the You Choose book to discuss this in groups. After this, children drew pictures and discussed what they'd like to be when they grow up. Adults supported children to use future tense such as, 'I would like to be a...' 'When I am older I will...'

In Maths we have been learning about measuring length, we have ordered different lengths and we have tried hard to measure the different lengths with measuring snakes and playdough. We have also been playing lots of sorting, matching and comparing games.

We loved learning about how to look after a baby! We loved meeting Selena (Mrs King’s baby). Children sang her Old McDonald; they read her stories and played with her.  After Selena's visit, we discussed what we could do as a baby and what we can do now.

Our children have had a very busy week getting to know each other and their teachers. We have enjoyed exploring the different areas in our learning environment. We helped our class puppet make good choices and then created a class promise. We have made a display so that we don’t forget. As a class we decided we will: use walking feet inside, use a quiet hand up, listen to others, we will tidy up when we have finished, be kind and gentle, use our looking eyes an inside voice and do good sitting.
