All of the Ermine tecahing staff welcome you to our class webpage.  Through the webpage, we hope to give you an insight into what daily life is like in our class - providing you with information about our curriculum, expectations and exciting events like school trips and swimming.  If there is anything else you need to know, or would like to talk to us about anything, please come and see us before school starts, at the end of the day, or make an appointment by contacting the school office.

Our School Day

The gates open at 8:40am and children must be in school for 8:50am, as this is when the register is taken and learning begins.

Reading

Everyday the children access at least one reading task.  They participate in structured Guided Redaing group lessons daily and throughout the week they will read with an adult on an individual basis.  Children MUST bring thier reading books to school with them EVERY DAY.

Please listen to your child read at home.  Ask them questions about their reading, such as: What type of book / story is it?  Who is the main charcater?  What is their personality like?  How do you know / what makes you think this?

This will really help them develop their comprehension skills.  The school expectation is that children read at home at least 3 times per week.  Please try and read as often as possible with your child - rewards are given in line with school policy for this.

Children are also encouraged to complete the Reading for Pleasure bookmarks as part of their homework.  The tasks for each bookmark can be found at the back of each child's homework book.

We also enjoy reading a class novel.  We are currently reading: Beowulf.

English

Every day we have an English and grammar lesson.  Details of what we are learning about can be found on our curriculum map, which can be accessed by the tab at the top.  This year we are participating in the Power of Reading Research project.  If we are chosen as an intervention school then our English curriculum may change and the website will be updated to reflect this.

This term our focus is: Legends

We will be reading and analysing a selection of legends, such as the legend of Finn McCool and the Giant's Causeway, The Fairy Flag of McLeod, The Loch Ness Monster, George and the Dragon and The Legend of Bedd Gelert.  We will use and innovate one of these stories in the writing phase of our English unit.

Maths

We will begin the year by up-levelling our place value skills in our daily maths lessons.  We will be working with large, 6-digit numbers and also decimal numbers to 3 decimal places.  It is really important that children understand the value of each digit in numbers, so please practise and re-inforce this at home.  We will then progress to addition and subtraction, statistics and angles.

We also keep working on our multiplication recall by completing Mrs Bell's times table challenge once a week.

Other subjects

All other lessons are taught weekly.  Art and DT and taught alternatively, every half term, as it History and Geography.  Computing has its own discrete lesson but is used throughtout the curriculum.  We have one timetabled session for PE per week, but we practise skills linked to the unit in our daily active times.  Information about what we are teaching and learning can be found on our curriculum map, by acessing the tab at the top.

P.E.

PE for Autumn Term 1 will be on a Friday.  PE kits must be in school on Fridays but children are expected to have them in school every day.

Swimming will also be this half term.  In school we will swim from 7th-11th September.  We will also attend the pool at Wavelengths for extra lessons on Thursday 17th September and Thursday 24th September.
