Welcome to class 5NM, we are the Meerkats! 

Year 5 is such an exciting time! It is full of new challenges, deeper learning and independence. 

I believe learning should be engaging, fun and supportive! In our classroom we will work as a team, celebrate each other's efforts and create a space where everyone feels confident and valued. 

I am super excited to get started and start this memorable and successful year for all of us! 

Miss Irfan is our class Teaching Asisstant. 

Mrs Jaleel is our PPA Teacher and will be teaching the children every Thursday mornings. 

Our phase leader is Mrs Hornby. 

Reedley Primary School Rules

is it safe? is it kind? is it my best?

We expect all children to wear full school uniform every day.

Boys - Black or grey trousers, white polo shirt and a navy-blue sweatshirt

Girls – Black or Grey dress or skirt, white polo shirt, blue checked dress, navy blue sweatshirt or cardigan. Girls can wear leggings or trousers.

Shoes - This includes plain black school shoes/boots with a sensible heel, not trainers and no logos. If children have a problem with their usual school shoes, they wear their black school pumps whilst in school.

Names - Please ensure that all items of clothing are named – then they be returned to your child if the items become lost.

HEADSCARVES

Girls can choose to wear a headscarf if they wish to. These should be plain black, blue or white and should have no decorations, and must not be fastened by pins. They should not be longer than shoulder length and must be removed for PE.

PE

Our PE day will be on a Tuesdays in the afternoon.

Children need to have a red polo t shirt, black shorts and black pumps. Kits and PE bags (not pumps) can be bought from the school office.

Children can have plain black tracksuit bottoms for outside PE when the weather is colder.

The PE kit should be brought into school and remain here until the end of each term, when it can be taken home for washing.

Please ensure your child has their P.E pumps and kit in school. Trainers can be worn if PE sessions are outside. PE kits will be kept in school and sent home for washing at the end of each half term. If your child has earrings, they should be removed for PE days. Staff in school are not permitted to do this.

JEWELLERY

Jewellery is not allowed in school expect for a small pair of stud earrings and a watch. For PE lessons, the earrings must be covered over with plasters (provided by the parent) or removed. For swimming lessons earrings must be removed. The children must be able to remove them themselves. Please keep all other jewellery at home at all times for safety purposes. If I have to take it from your child, it could get lost.

Swimming

The pop-up swimming pool will be coming to school on the week beginning 01.09.2025.  Year 5 start swimming on the 7^th September. We have two sessions coming up at Pendle wavelengths which will be during the school day, the two dates are Thursday 1^st October and Thursday 8^th October. 

READING BOOK AND BOOK BAG

Part of reading, children will be taking part in Reading Pledge. All children are expected to read to an adult as often as possible but at least once a week. Please date and sign the reading diary when your child has read at home. This is imperative if we are to help our children build their reading comprehension and reading stamina in general. Children will move up the pledge ladder each week and will receive a gift for having their journal signed 10 times.

Reading books and diaries should be available in school every day so that we can also hear your child read.

We ask that all children read with an adult at home for around 10 minutes every day.

Please date and sign the reading diary when your child has read at home. This is imperative if we are to help our children build their reading comprehension and reading stamina in general.

WATER

Children should bring a clear, plastic water bottle everyday with their name on. This should not have juice in.

In our class we put our water bottles at the back in the box. After play times and lunch times each row will be allowed to have a drink of water.

Water bottles should not be kept on desks, unless in different circumstances due to the hot weather. 

HOMEWORK -

I will send Homework books home on a Thursday and the work should be completed by the following Tuesday.Homework is usually to consolidate something we have already learnt in class and it is really important that it is completed. If your child is not able to complete the work, please let me know.

Your child will also have access to Maths Whizz which is a Mathematics based programme. Your children can access this at home and in school. We recommend that they try to do around 10 minutes each day on this at home to support their work in school.

Children are not expected to spend more than 10 minutes on each task. The homework will include Maths, English and a talking topic.

READING FOR PLEASURE

There is a Reading For Pleasure Scheme that takes place each year, The children are asked to complete tasks related to different animals, working their way through the alphabet.

It is expected for them to complete one per fortnight on average. There are certificates for those children who complete them.

TIMES TABLES

Mrs Bell will be continuing with the timetables awards this year. The children that have achieved the award, will be announced during assembly on Friday.

HANDWRITING

In school we use the following kinetic handwriting formations. Through the Kinetic Letters programme, children will develop legible, fluent, and automatic handwriting by combining physical strength, correct pencil grip, and structured letter formation. It would be really helpful if you ask your child to help you do some writing at home. Maybe they can write the shopping list or a list of jobs that you need to do in town.

CLASS TRIP/VISITORS

Our trip to Clitheroe Castle is on the 21^st September, children will be learning about the Anglo-Saxons relating to our theme topic.

School Day start

It is vital that the children are in school on time every day. The pedestrian gate is 
unlocked at 8.40am and locked at 8.50am when the school day starts. Children arriving after 
this time need to enter school via the School Office and must be dropped off at the blue buzzer 
gate by an adult.
Our lessons start promptly at 8.50am so children arriving after this time often miss 
instructions and demonstrations from the teacher.

Please ensure that the school is kept up-to-date with medical/dietary requirements and photographic permissions.
