Reading Buddies

The Y5/6 Reading Buddies have had a very successful Autumn Term working with some of the Year 1 and Year 2 children and supporting them with their reading.

From Monday 12th January, the Reading Buddies will also be working with children in Reception.

We are proud of the Reading Buddies who give up some of their lunchtime to carry out their Reading Buddy duties and we know that the younger children are so excited when their Reading Buddy knocks on their door to work with them!

Primary School Admissions

School admissions are open and will close on 15th January.

If your child is in their last year of pre-school/nursery you can now apply for their primary school place at: https://www.lancashire.gov.uk/search/?search=school+admissions

You must apply even if you already have siblings in our school.

Interested parents should contact Miss Cowell or Mrs Simmonds who can forward requests to the team.

They will complete an initial assessment with you to decide whether the group is suitable.

If not, they can offer advice or refer to another service.

Pendle Witch Workshop

Year 3 had a Pendle Witches workshop this week run by Rachael Jackson from Cultural Services at Lancashire County Council.

The workshop explore the stereotypes that people have of witches. Then the children looked at artefacts and dramatised one of the Pendle Witch Trials, deciding whether or not it was a fair trial. They all loved it!

Bad Weather

Whenever the weather forecast shows cold or icy weather, we work hard to make the school as safe as possible for everyone. We are delighted this week that we have been able to keep the school site safe for everyone.

·         We now pay a company who come and grit the carpark and playground if the weather is cold.

·         We find alternative routes into school if the paths are not safe to walk on.

·         We prioritise clearing evacuation routes that the children can use to leave the building in an emergency, should we need to.

·         We have contacted the local council about the fact that they failed to make pavements and roads safe around school this week.

·         We ensure additional staff are around school to support families getting into the school grounds.

·         We will make use of staff in school to cover any staff member that has not been able to make it to school on time due to the weather conditions.

Obviously we cannot foresee every eventuality but we will work to find solutions to problems to ensure that school remains open as much as possible.

If we are not able to make the site safe and have to close, we will notify you by sending you a message. This would usually be around 7am. There is no need to call the school.

Just check for messages on your phone before you leave.

You can help by

-          Ensuring that we have your up to date contact details so that you will receive any messages that we send.

-          Allowing more time for your journey or to de-ice the car.

-          Ensuring that you drive and park safely and legally. Many people stopped on double yellow lines or yellow zig zags to drop children off on Wednesday this week. This is illegal and dangerous to other road users.

British Values

I spoke to the children today about the fundamental British Values that we promote in school.

These are Democracy, the Rule of Law, Individual Liberty, Mutual Respect, and Tolerance of different faiths and beliefs. The purpose is to preparing children for life in a diverse modern Britain by promoting good citizenship, respect, and understanding of rights and responsibilities.

Today in assembly, I spoke about the Rule Of Law. Many children initially think it would exciting to do whatever they like and to live in a world with no rules. I explained though that the rules we have in society, in school and at home are there to keep them safe. If there were no rules or punishments, we couldn’t stop them from being hurt or having their things taken or damaged.
