Bikeability

Bikeability gives children the opportunity to develop important cycling and life skills. As children learn to ride, they develop their balance, coordination, control and confidence. They learn how to start and stop safely, pedal, steer, brake and be aware of what is happening around them.
As children progress through Bikeability, they also learn important road-safety skills. They learn about road signs, signals and markings, how to communicate with other road users, and how to safely negotiate junctions and other situations on quieter roads.
Bikeability also helps children develop independence, responsibility and decision-making skills. They learn to check that their bike is safe, assess their surroundings and make sensible choices while cycling. The programme is designed to build skills progressively, helping children become safer and more confident cyclists.
Overall, Bikeability is more than learning to ride a bike. It helps children develop physical, social and practical skills that can support their confidence and independence in everyday life.
